SAC CYO League Rules/Policies

2nd Grade League Rules

  • No Score is kept on the scoreboard or score sheet. Only playing time is recorded on the sheet.

  • No standings or results are to be maintained.

  • Playing time must equal (as close as possible) for each player. Entire group substitution (5 players) is required for each period. If the team has less than 10 players, they may substitute balance of players.

  • A group prayer consisting of both teams shall precede every game.

  • Coaches are responsible for the refereeing of the game.

  • A no-press rule is applicable throughout the entire year. The determination is:

    • ​Once a team has gained control of the ball as a result of a defensive rebound, a stolen pass, or dribble, the opposing team may not make any defensive play towards the player/ball in an attempt to regain possession or slow up the player in control of the ball.

    • The team who had lost team control of the ball and is now in transition to defense must run down the floor and set up to play defense. the offense must wait until all five defensive players have crossed below the top of the key before any attempt to score can be made. No fast breaks.

    • The offense may not throw the ball the ball over the top of a retreating defense. The defensive team may pick up defense only from the free throw line extended.

    • There is a 10 second violation in backcourt.

    • The coaches shall be empowered to halt play during the game to allow the defense time to retreat down court to defend it's basket.

  • The game consist of eight 5 minute running  clock quarters with a 5 minute half time.

  • Free throws will be shot from the inside circle closest to the basket.

  • Crowd Control, Negative player or Coach Responses

    • A team's spectator must be controlled by the coach. A warning will be issued to the coach to control his spectators. Failure to control the spectators shall result in the gym being cleared of all the spectators for both teams.

    • Profanity, either on the court from a player or coach, or from a spectator will result in his or her immediate removal from the gym.

    • any negative response by a player or coach shall result in a warning. Any  further negative action will result in immediate removal from the game. Any coach or player who has been ejected from a game will be required to appear before the SAC CYO Sportsmanship Committee before returning as a player or coach.

  • A half time free throw shot (1) for all eligible players. One per person

3rd Grade League Rules

  • ​Normal Diocesan eligibilty rules apply.

  • Normal game score will be kept during each quarter and reset at the end of each quarter.

  • All play rule in effect

    • ​Once a team has gainied control of the ball as a result of a defensive rebound, a stolen pass, or dribble, the opposing team may not make any defensive play towards the player/ball in an attempt to regain possession or slow up the player in control of the ball.

    • The team who had lost team control of the ball and is now in transition to defense must run down the floor and set up to play defense.

    • Fast breaks will be allowed.

    • The defensive team may pick up defense after allowing the player to enter the front court.

    • There is a 10 second violation in backcourt.

    • The officials shall be empowered to halt play during the game to allow the defense time to retreat down court to defend their basket.

  • Free throws will be shot from the inside circle closest to the basket.

  • Crowd Control, Negative player or Coach Responses

  • Optional- A half time shot (1) for all eligible players. Each team will shoot the same amount of free throws as players. Any team that has less players than the other team will be able to shoot the difference and each shot must be done by a different player.

Running Up the Score

The Boy's Athletic Director is to monitor along with the SAC CYO league the potential unnecessary "Running up the scores". The offending coach must appear before the Sportsmanship Committee at the time specified by the Sportsmanship committee following the offense. Failure of either or both to appear will result in automatic suspension of or the next scheduled league game.

 

The league will monitor and review once a complaint is lodged. The following criteria would be evaluated.

  • Documented comments on the back of the score sheet under " Running up the score" section.

  • Point spreads based on the following:

    • 8th grade - 30 points

    • 7th grade - 25 points

    • 6th grade - 25 points

    • 5th grade - 20 points

    • 4th grade - 20 points

    • 3rd grade - 15 points

 

Tearns Per Grade

  • Each SAC CYO parish qualifies to one team per grade for the American division and unlimited teams per grade for the National division provided space is available. If a program has one team, it is automatically assigned to the American Division.

  • Request for exemptions will be voted on in the first meeting of the season. See request requirements.

Proper Roster Sizes

  • The SAC CYO requires that the minimum of eight active players be on any A Division or N Division team. Exceptions must be requested to the league for review.

New Press Rule

  • Teams ahead by (10/15) points or more (based on which grade) may not full court press.

  • First time will be a WARNING.

  • Second time  (and more) will be a technical and an automatic two points for team behind, plus ball out of bounds for them.

Tiebreaker Rules

  • Record in Head To Head match-ups. In case of teams splitting the Head To Head matchups (1-1), the winner of the last Head To Head game, wins the tiebreaker.

  • Record against other teams in finishing order. For Example, if 2 teams are tied for 3rd place, we look at the records against the first place team. If teams have the same record against the first place team, we look at the records against the 2nd place team and so on, until we have determined the tiebreaker.

Forfeit

  • A team must begin the game with five players but may finish with less if need be. 

  • Game time is forfeit time
